3 Useful Studies on BiOWiSH™ Manure & Odor: Beef & Dairy

BIOWISHTM MANURE & ODOR TREATMENT: BEEF & DAIRY BENEFITS FARMS THAT ARE STRUGGLING TO CONTROL MANURE LAGOONS.

BiOWiSHTM Manure & Odor Treatment: Beef & Dairy:

  • Accelerates decomposition of organic waste
  • Removes rather than masks odor
  • Reduces BOD and TSS
  • Reduces strength of effluent
  • Improves nutrient availability if effluent is used for irrigation
  • Reduces TN, TP & TKN
  • Reduces the need for sludge pump-outs
BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT – CHECK OUT THESE 3 STUDIES CONDUCTED BY OUR CUSTOMERS AND A UNIVERSITY.

1. Wilhelmus Dairy

Prior to using BiOWiSHTM Manure & Odor – Beef & Dairy, Arjen Geijsel, owner and manager of the dairy, was concerned about the sludge content in the farm’s primary lagoon of its three-stage wastewater management system. The sludge level of the lagoon was very close to capacity at 94% full. Additionally, he was interested to see the impact of BiOWiSHTM on odor emanating from his operation and in managing nutrient loading on his pastures.

By using BiOWiSHTM, Wilhemus Dairy effectively degraded surface crusting, reduced sludge buildup by 18%, substantially reduced nutrient loading on the pastures. According to the owner, the effluent was practically odorless.

2. Leppington Dairy

Leppington was facing 3 major issues with its wastewater treatment lagoons. First, the lagoon was crusting over which prevents natural aeration and contributes to an unbalanced, anaerobic state. Second, the manure lagoon was prone to suspended solids and accumulated bottom sludge which causes lagoons to become inoperable and creates the need for agitation and pump-outs. Third, the management of nutrients released by farms has been an ongoing concern due to its impact on groundwater and receiving surface waters. Elevated levels of nutrient contribute to excess growth of aquatic weeds, algal blooms and slimes, reduced habitat for fish and other environmental problems.

By the end of the 12th week using BiOWiSH, turbidity and TSS in the primary effluent pond had been drastically cut by 94% and 92%, respectively. Since the adoption of BiOWiSHTM the effluent pond has now been totally free of crust even when solids screening is not in operation. Additionally, Total Nitrogen (TKN) in the secondary and tertiary lagoons has dropped by up to 47%, whilst Total Phosphorus (TP) has dropped by up to 54%, achieving better management of nutrients.

3. The Effect and Efficacy of BiOWiSHTM for Reducing Solids in Dairy Wastewater – California Polytechnic State University

This study, conducted by Nirupam Pal, Ph.D, at California Polytechnic State University, tested BiOWiSHTM wastewater treatment formulations for their ability to reduce the solids content of dairy wastewater. Significant reductions in Total Suspended Solids (TSS) were observed with a single dose of these products. Particle size analysis shows that the BiOWiSHTM treatments reduce the size of suspended particles across the size range from 0.7 to 5.0 µm.
